Provincial Sports meet in MAMBURAO

Delegations from 11 municipalities of
Occidental Mindoro cheerfully participated in the early morning parade that marked the opening
of the Provincial Sports Meet on November 25, 2002., followed by a search for two muses for
the Elementary School and the High School teams, each with a title of "Miss Provincial Sports
Meet 2002". Both Calintaan girls were the lucky winners. Entertainments continued in the
afternoon and evening with band competition and singing contest among teachers from each
delegation. The Mina De Oro School Band (formerly Mendiola School) of San Jose won the first
prize. Finally, a welcome party for all the delegates was arranged at the OMNHS and hosted by
Mayor Allan Aquino who was celebrating his birthday that day.
On day two (November 26) all games began
at 8:00 A.M. The Mamburao Town Plaza was the venue for
the basketball games while the front field of the Mamburao Cockpit Arena was used for the
baseball games. The track and field and football games were held at the Occidental Mindoro
High School and the Mamburao Central School respectively.
The biggest fund-raisers of the October Town Fiesta, the three lovely contestants, were
finally honored at the Coronation Night held at the Mamburao Gymnasium on Friday, October 11,
2002.
Miss Azenith Cabrera, 21-year old resident of Barangay 9, was second runner-up and awarded as
"Lakambini ng Mamburao 2002", representing the Municipal Government offices where she is
currently employed. She was crowned by the municipal accountant, Mrs. Maan Remo Alcaide and
assisted by Mrs. Marivi de Lemos Aquino (wife of the ABC President Alvin T. Aquino).
The first runner-up, named as the "Perlas ng Mamburao 2002", was 21-year old primary school
teacher, Miss Cherry Ann Rosillo of Barangay Balansay. She was crowned by Mrs. Dulce Ramirez
Masangkay and DPWH accountant, Mrs. Agnes Pansalin de Lara. She was the candidate of the
National Government offices.
The lucky winner was the candidate of the Provincial Capitol offices and an employee of ENRO,
24-year old Miss Apple Tadeo of Paluan, Occidental Mindoro who was crowned "Mutya ng Mamburao
2002" by Governor Jose T. Villarosa and his wife, Amelita who has been serving as the Town
Fiesta President since last year.
OCTOBER TOWN FIESTA
The October Town Fiesta Celebration in Mamburao in honor of our Patroness
Nuestra Senora del Pilar starts on October 5 and headed by the Fiesta Event President, Mrs.
Amelita Villarosa, wife of Governor Jose Villarosa. One of the highlights of the celebration
is the coronation of “Miss Mamburao 2002”, the lucky winner of the money contest to raise
funds for the town and the church.. Three candidates representing the Municipal Government
Office, the Provincial Capitol and the the National Government Office are vying for the
crown. Half of the proceeds will be donated for the improvement of the parish church.
Competitions in basketball and volleyball are scheduled for October 12
with several teams from neighboring towns such as Abra de Ilog, Paluan and Sta Cruz
participating. Championship cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the winners by
Governor Villarosa.

52nd
ANNIVERSAY of OCCIDENTAL MINDORO 
The beginning celebration of the 52nd Anniversary of Occidental Mindoro was held on
November 15, 2002 at the Provincial Capitol stage in Mamburao, with entertainments from our
local talents in singing and dancing, composed of students and government employees. The
fabulous ethnic presentation of the San Jose students received the greatest applause.
As final anniversary celebration, the Municipal Government and the Department of Education and
the Commission on Sports, are now busy preparing for the November 24th Provincial Meet in
Mamburao, with players from differrent municipalities participating in football, volleyball,
basketball, table tennis, chess and other athletic events. The participants will be
accomodated in the Mamburao Central School, the West Mindoro Academy and the Occidental
Mindoro National High School.

Difficulties in outright long
distance communication with our families and friends will soon be a thing of the past when the
cable by Global, which is currently under construction, will be in operation. It will run
between Batangas and Mamburao and all the way to other towns of Mindoro.
NEW COLLEGE BUILDING
The only existing college in Mamburao k nown
as the Occidental Mindoro National College (OMNC) which has been holding classes in some
rooms of the Mamburao Central School will soon have its own building and presently under
construction in a location donated by Mr. Jopson besides the motor pool of DPWH. Thousands
of students from different municipalities are currently enrolled in this college that offers
courses leading to Bachelor degrees in Education, Elementary Education, Commerce and
Accounting, including technical courses, such as Computer Study and Practical Electricity. The
college administrator is Mrs. Rosario Mercene. |
