What is identity theft? Identity theft is the unauthrozied use of another person's identification information to obtain credit, goods, services, money or property.
How do you prevent them? Guard your personal information very carefully and only exchange personal and financial information with trusted sources.
More preventive Tips: 1. Shred pre-approved credit card offers and other documents containing personal information. Your trash is a gold mine for thieves. 2. Have the post office put mail on hold if away for an extended period. Avoid having unsecured mail around your premises. 3. Remove your name from direct marketing lists for free at www.e-mps.org.4. Don't share bank or online passwords. 5. Monitor your credit. Request a credit report at least once a year from the three major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian and Transunion.
Where do you turn for help if it happens? 1. Contact creditors to close your accounts. 2. Notify major credit bureaus and ask them to put an alert message on your report. 3. Contact local police.
